Pregnancy and birth are sacred and transformative times that should be free of trauma, inequity, and violence.
We value traditional and ancestral knowledge and ways of birthing that are healing and empowering for pregnant and birthing people.
We are a community of practice. Our relationships hold us accountable to our learning and together we make a greater impact.
Nesting Doula Collective provides care and support to Black, Indigenous and communities of colour at all stages of their reproductive journey from conception to postpartum. Our approach upholds the principles of informed consent, culturally appropriate care, and community connection. We are a growing collective of Black, Indigenous, and people of colour who are trained in providing professional, empowering, and anti-oppressive Doula support to our diverse clients and families.
A Doula is also known as a birth keeper or a birth helper who provides continuous care beginning from early labour until after your baby is born . We provide information, physical and emotional support, as well as advocacy during the birthing process. Doulas can support you at your home and hospital birth. We work in collaboration with you and your birth team. Doulas do not perform any medical tasks. We have the specific honour of helping you create a birth plan, providing you with physical comfort measures throughout your labour, supporting your choices during your birth by making sure you have the information you need, and advocating for your dignity and agency during your birth.
We believe that each pregnancy and birth is a transformative experience whether you have done it before or this is your first time. We also think that having support is an essential way to promote positive pregnancy and birthing experiences. The Nesting Doula Collective provides support that is culturally affirming because we value the traditional and ancestral knowledge and ways of birthing that continue to be practiced around the world. These practices can increase your confidence, help you feel grounded and connected, as well as affirmed in your identity and culture.
Our philosophy includes the principle of radical consent. We recognize the ways that culturally diverse communities continue to face challenges in accessing health care that respects their agency and decision making power. Your body and your baby is your own and we support you to make informed decisions every step of the way.
Our mission is to create holistic, empowered, and culturally-affirmed experiences with conception, pregnancy, and all pregnancy-outcomes including birth, miscarriage, loss, and abortion.
We dream of a world where all pregnant and birthing people regardless of race, religion, status, sexuality, gender, class, age, and ability have access to the care, respect, and services that they need to have positive experiences in the transformative moments of their lives.
