Focus: Birth and Postpartum Doula
Language: English

Qilat (they/them) is a queer, non-binary, Filipinx settler of Ibanag, Ilokano, and Tagalog descent. They are a full-spectrum doula but supporting births is what makes their heart sing in tune with their ancestors. They offer perinatal education, birth support, and postpartum support.

They balance their practice with being a full-time student in the JD/JID program at UVic — doulawyer! Qilat strives to work not only with Black, Indigenous, and birthers of Colour, but also Queer and Trans families.

Qilat has a familial approach to birthwork - they want it to feel like your cousin is there with you to hold your hand, massage your back, and feed you snacks. They describe their support as reassuring and physically present: at a birth, they are hands-on with counter-pressure and massage, supporting you with laboring positions, and staying with you until you’re comfortably resting postpartum. You can count on them to be at your side and reminding you of your strength. They will do their best to support your partners too! At postpartum visits, Q is happy to play with older children, meal prep, or help tidy around the house.

Qilat’s practice emphasizes the importance of postpartum nutrition. The first weeks postpartum are vital for restoring energy, healing, and supporting lactation. They believe in keeping postpartum parents warm, especially with the food they eat. They love cooking new dishes and would love to cook your cultural postpartum or comfort meals. Or you can try a Filipino dish!!
